This report, a result of the Institute's participation in the 1987 International Conference on the Death Penalty held in Italy, briefly describes the activities of the United Nations Social Defense Research Institute (UNSDRI) on the issue of capital punishment.
Abstract
UNSDRI, as an interregional institute, has shown interest in reviewing all relevant research on capital punishment and has published several papers including an international bibliography and a report describing major trends in capital punishment research. This latter report, included in this volume, presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of major trends in research during the period 1979-1986. This survey is based on materials available in the UNSDRI library, covers only published works, and deals only with the legally-defined death penalty. The international bibliography, also included in this volume, consists of monographs, scholarly articles, book reviews, yearbooks, and United Nations and Council of Europe publications and documents; penal codes, encyclopedias, dissertations, popular media articles, audiovisual materials, and unpublished works have been excluded.
