A 1989 conference focused on initiatives being developed in England and Wales to prevent juvenile delinquency through measures focusing on the social and environmental factors associated with high levels of juvenile delinquency that provide alternative opportunities and facilities for youth activity.
Abstract
Participants examined the structures and systems necessary for the successful implementation of social crime prevention strategies. A consensus emerged that successful programs require accurate local information about crime and other factors that affect the quality of life in the neighborhood, because action is focused on the geographical area and on crime itself rather than on individual potential offenders. In addition, interagency coordination and cooperation are necessary for planning and implementing action. Moreover, community involvement and participation in decisionmaking and systems for monitoring and evaluating strategies are also essential.
