This report describes the crucial elements needed for a strategic and comprehensive approach to juvenile delinquency prevention in the United Kingdom, noting that local organizations and agencies are not currently operating comprehensive juvenile delinquency prevention programs or modifying their operations to include youth crime prevention.
Abstract
Effective crime prevention is possible, but it is likely only with well-coordinated local efforts with appropriate support from the central government. Needed actions include making crime prevention a statutory responsibility for local governments, provision of adequate funding from the central and local governments, and provision of guidance and adequate resources to schools for their prevention efforts. Additional measures should include adequate recreational opportunities for youth, additional services to the families experiencing the greatest difficulties, and policy changes to support rather than punish parents whose children have behavior problems.
