One of every five officers was assaulted in 1988, and the most frequent month for officer assaults was January. The circumstance in which most officer assaults occurred in 1988 was officer response to a disturbance call (28.3 percent). The assignment under which most officer assaults occurred in 1988 was one-person vehicle assisted (40.9 percent). The most frequent weapon used in officer assaults was some part of the assaulter's body (hands, fist, feet, etc.) (82.8 percent). Injuries to officers as a result of an assault increased by 2.1 percent from 1987 to 1988. No officers were killed feloniously in 1988.
