The book first presents the Bill of Rights (constitutional amendments 1-10) and the fourteenth amendment which pertains to due process and equal protection of the laws. Five cases pertain to due process of law, and 46 cases address arrest and search-and-seizure procedures. Six cases deal with either electronic surveillance, agents and informers, or entrapment. Nine cases focus on the right to counsel, and 21 cases deal with the privilege against self-incrimination. Other cases pertain to lineups, preliminary examination, bail, the right to a speedy trial, plea bargaining, trial by jury, trial procedures, double jeopardy, sentencing, and collateral attack. The texts are edited only for economy of space and to eliminate material unrelated to criminal justice. Concurring and dissenting opinions are included when they make a substantial contribution to the discussion of the matter at issue.
