Using a question-and-answer format, this booklet provides the Canadian public with information on the Nation's correctional system.
Abstract
An overview of corrections in Canada presents a statement of the mission of the Correctional Service of Canada, followed by demographic information on the country that includes population and offender data. All information provided in the booklet pertains only to adult corrections. Data address the imprisonment rate, parole and probation, pardons, correctional facilities, correctional staff, and the cost of corrections. Information on Federal correctional facilities covers the number of correctional facilities by security level. Data on the Federal offender population address the distribution of offender population by region and security level; admission and release; inmate profile (male, female, aboriginal, and by race); sentence length; types of sentence; previous terms of incarceration; sentences for murder; security-related incidents; and private family visits. Other information categories are parole and mandatory supervision, temporary absences, inmate employment and education, inmate rights, the Correctional Services budget, and the cost of incarceration.
