These statistics, which have been published annually since 1961, focus on three subjects: number and capacity of correctional facilities; number of inmates; and admissions/departures throughout the year. In addition, criminological and demographic information (type of offense, type of sentence, duration of prison term, age, and marital status) on inmates who were in correctional institutions as of March 31 are published. All of the statistics included in this text are taken from the records of the individual correctional institutions and inmate records as collated by the German Bureau of Statistics. The statistics on admissions/departures include not only new inmates, but consist predominately of transfers between prisons. The collection also includes a survey of inmate developments from 1961 to 1981 as well as inmate statistics on individual correctional institutions and the individual West German Laender or States.
