The speeches presented at the Conference "Prevention of Illegal Drug Abuse," in Wiesbaden on January 22 and 23 of 1991 are reprinted or summarized.
Abstract
The conference was attended by 38 specialists from the police, politics, academe, the media, and the private sector. The focal point of the presentations was how the schools, media, social services, police, and private initiatives can contribute to drug prevention. Despite the variety of approaches and backgrounds, the experts agreed on a list of demands to reduce drug abuse in West Germany. First, drug prevention must begin at an early age; therefore, the schools should integrate drug information into their curriculum. The media should refrain from showing programs which incite drug abuse; however, specific guidelines for media coverage are presently lacking. The preventive effects of existing public and private drug programs must be carefully evaluated. The exchange of information and the co-operation among local, regional, and national agencies must be improved. An outline of the preventive efforts in the public schools of the State of Hessen is appended.
