The 20 Federal agencies represented on the Coordinating Council on the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention report that more than 260 programs relate to juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, with Federal funding of more than $3 billion. The emphasis on community-based correction projects has increased, and options now include restitution programs, community service, and intensive probation. Other projects, including correctional industries, alternative schools, intensive aftercare, literacy skills training, and juvenile boot camps, also show promise. Efforts to address drug abuse and related youth crime are also receiving high priority. In addition, eight Federal agencies funded 89 research projects related to juvenile delinquency.
