Victoria Police's Operation Olympus and Police/Schools Involvement Programs are described.
Abstract
The goal of the Operation Olympus project is to encourage self control and discipline among young people. At the end of the year, the police offer a trophy to the most disciplined contact sports club in a league. The police/schools involvement program implements six major themes into the school curriculum. These include the role of police, legal systems, rights, rules, and responsibilities, consequences of our actions, keeping ourselves and others safe, and drugs and alcohol (life skills). Some themes are presented for a short time, whereas others run throughout the school year. The school resource officers (SRO) work closely with the school communities in executing their duties in the program while maintaining an operational shift in the police stations. In addition, they wear police uniforms while teaching in school and participate in a 2-week training on teaching methods. The success of the program is assessed through an external evaluation, particularly of public attitudes toward police. 3 references
