The interdisciplinary approach is intended to integrate theoretical insights and practical applications. Topics address range from crime control policy and sentencing reform to specific strategies and methods for reducing crime. Issues confronting individuals who work in the corrections field are also addressed. The volume begins with a general assessment and critique of current crime control policy in the United States. Next, five papers examine community corrections including intensive supervision probation, electronic monitoring, the role of punishment and control in community supervision, and the role of practitioners of correctional supervision. Seven additional papers examine institutional corrections, focusing on prisoners' rights, crowding and the quality of prison life, segregation and hidden discrimination, AIDS in correctional facilities, capital punishment, elderly inmates, and parole decisionmaking. Juvenile justice is also examined with emphasis on emerging trends and issues and common myths regarding juvenile delinquency and juvenile corrections. The volume concludes with a discussion of unanswered questions related to sentencing reform and correctional policy.
