Expansion of the In-Jail Substance Abuse Treatment and Diversion and Treatment programs remain a high priority. The inmate program includes a year-long plan of both treatment and aftercare with a voluntary acupuncture component. The Diversion and Treatment Program which was created to divert first-time, drug-related offenders from prison has expanded to approximately 2,000 participants per year. An efficient, automated system used for tracking and monitoring clients is essential prior to further expansions. Due to interest and participants' receptivity, additional hours for acupuncture have been included in the treatment schedule. In conjunction with Miami Dade Community College, the Aftercare Program has been established to provide education and job placement, and services for women substance abusers are emphasized. Since mothers and babies addicted to crack cocaine is a real problem in the community, a multi-faceted program has been designed by Dade County to provide comprehensive services to pregnant women and women with children. Three additional goals considered essential in fighting drugs in the community are: secure residential treatment for juveniles, establish management information system, and establish central receiving center.
