Metropolitan Dade County (Florida) has been providing drug abuse treatment since 1971 and has recently developed several innovative efforts including a comprehensive Diversion and Treatment Program designed to provide an effective alternative for dealing with the large number of drug-related offenses in the county.
Abstract
The Diversion and Treatment Program uses the latest techniques available in drug abuse treatment including acupuncture. The program's population is also closely monitored through urinalysis. In addition, the program rests on the recognition that effective drug abuse treatment must consist of a holistic approach to addressing the multiple problems that influence an individual's behavior and addition. Thus, the program has established a partnership with Miami-Dade Community College and has two aftercare programs operating on the colleges north and south campuses. Clients are assessed as needed with the goal of providing a full range of academic, vocational, and support services needed to maintain healthy and productive lifestyles. Lists of procedures and information recorded on client information cards are included.
