Since the Diversion and Treatment Program (DATP) was founded in Metro-Dade County (Florida) in June 1989, nearly 4,300 defendants have been placed into the program, with an estimated 3,800 clients for the remainder of calendary 1991.
Abstract
Over 1,600 clients have successfully completed drug treatment, had their charges dismissed, and returned to society; the recidivism rate among this group is less than 3 percent. The program costs $500 per person, which is mostly offset by fees collected from clients, totaling over $19,000 per month. Although the program started exclusively with Dade-County resources, over 200 private residential treatment beds have been committed to the program. There have been no trials in the Drug Court; its objective is to match defendants with appropriate treatment programs.
