A self help anger management program for inmates is described. It was developed at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and has been used successfully in other Canadian prisons.
Abstract
Through written exercises, offenders recognize their feelings of anger, learn their causes, and deal with them in a responsible way. Guidelines are provided to help the inmate to get to know himself, especially how he thinks, how he got to where he is now, and how he can change his life. Explanations are offered for reasons why aggression expressed during anger can lead to physical or verbal abuse of others. Topics on managing anger include dealing with the outsider reasons, arousal and how to lower its level, relaxation, thinking controls; signposting anger; staging; communicating feelings; calming others; recognizing anger; and the staging process and feeling and action controls.
