Of critical importance is the exchange of information on how to cut costs with employees and other departments. A survey of 100 law enforcement executives conducted by the National Executive Institute showed that cost saving measures could be attained in areas of overtime, vehicles, volunteers, civil participation, operation streamlining, automation, reduction of false alarms, use of Federal forfeiture funds, service fees, and subcontracting for services. Some management suggestions are presented for categories of automation, administration, maintenance, training, automobiles, and other miscellaneous areas. The most consistently described quality of excellent leadership is characterized by commitment to the community, organization, self, people, and task.
