The nonverbal profile of deception is described in order to help probation officers distinguish between honesty and deceptive communication during a presentence interview.
Abstract
Kinesic behavior during deception differs from honest communication because of values and impact of consequences. Maintaining deception over time becomes stressful and more difficult, especially with adverse consequences. Well known kinesic signals of deception, such as inability to maintain eye contact, eye movement, or animated behavior, as well as paralanguage, body language, proxemics, or strategies of communication are useful indicators of deception during an interview. However, the key to discerning deception at the non-verbal level is to compare the presentation with one from an honest person. Together with proper interview preparation and assessment of data provided, observation of kinesic behavior in a client can help, during an interrogation type interview, to determine truthful from deceptive accounts. 5 references
