An effort to improve cooperation among police and schools to prevent juvenile delinquency through primary prevention efforts began in 1981 in Hamburg, Germany and has received positive evaluations by the students involved.
Abstract
The effort was prompted by recognition that punitive measures following delinquent behavior did not necessarily reduce juvenile delinquency and often increased it. The program involved discussions led by police officers, with the topics and time determined by the teacher. The program involved 2-4 hours per class. The program was evaluated by means of a questionnaire survey of 550 students between ages 8 and 18 in 1985. Results revealed that the prevention program improved students' attitudes toward the police. In addition, most of the students had positive attitudes toward the discussion of juvenile delinquency and reported that their knowledge had increased. Results suggested the desirability of continuing this form of juvenile delinquency prevention.
