The schools are based on the ideas of Nicolaj Grundtvig, who believed that every citizen has the right to take part in and influence social and cultural life. The schools offer alternative education combining theoretical and practical training. Most students attend schools in their leisure time to supplement their formal schooling or to learn more about their hobbies. Courses include woodworking, dressmaking, and other courses for which no examination is required; courses to prepare for qualifying examinations in ordinary school subjects; and special education for students with physical and learning disabilities. These schools may also provide courses such as driver education, vocational courses, and recreational activities. Teachers need not have formal qualifications.
