The Kestrel project, located in a local primary school on the Cowgate estate in north Newcastle, works in partnership with other agencies and encourages a self-help approach to some of the underlying problems in the area such as crime, unemployment, and poor youth facilities.
Abstract
This profile of the Kestrel project describes project aims and activities, management, and staffing issues and identifies program achievements and problems. A detached youth work approach is one of the main features of the Kestrel project which has three primary objectives: to respond to the needs of unattached youth in the area and to involve them in activities which enhance their personal and social development, to obtain the support of local residents and to involve them in this work, and to encourage local agencies to improve their services to youth. Local police officers support the project's work and believe it has a positive impact on youth crime. 1 table
