The Bryn Hafren Girls School in Barry, South Wales has implemented a school-based youth crime prevention panel to increase young people's awareness of local crime problems and to encourage their involvement in crime prevention work.
Abstract
In addition to describing the organization and activities of the panel, this profile outlines management and staffing issues, discusses program costs and funding, and identifies program achievements and problems. A typical action plan for a panel, which meets once weekly during the term and consists of fourth, fifth, and sixth form students, involves the following steps: selecting a topic of most concern, surveying students, analyzing results, establishing prevention schemes, and monitoring and evaluating results. Several crimes and crime-related problems have been identified and a number of practice initiatives created. Initiatives include work on under-age drinking and alcohol abuse as well as shoplifting and solvent abuse. 1 table
