Abstract
The purpose of the training is to present the fundamentals of handgun handling and use. Officers who apply these fundamentals will become more proficient in handgun use and will develop the confidence necessary to undertake dangerous assignments. This preparation is also necessary for entry into advanced training and techniques programs. The first section, or orientation, covers topics including personal goals in firearms training, common problems and errors, safety equipment, training considerations, gun safety requirements, police training needs, and types and features of police weapons. The second section introduces safety rules, revolver nomenclature, handgun care, legal issues including liability and use of deadly force, and elements of combat shooting for police. The final section discusses the typical police shotgun and describes its range, capabilities, versatility, psychological value, sight alignment, trigger control, and follow-through.
