Thefts of and from cars increased by 24 percent in 1991 over the previous year. The increase prompted renewed efforts on the part of the government to persuade manufacturers to improve car security and owners to take more care in securing their vehicles and removing valuables from them. More needs to be done in relation to securing the perimeter of the car. Car radio/cassette parts should be dispersed throughout the vehicle, and the public requires further encouragement to secure their valuables or not to leave them in parked cars. Also necessary is a more effective immobilizing device. Changing the attitudes and behavior of young people emerges as the most difficult area for effective action given the attraction and power of the motor car in today's society. 8 figures, 9 tables, and 33 references
