Data obtained from the southcentral region of the Alaska Division of Family and Youth Services were used to analyze general characteristics of juveniles referred for criminal activity, the kinds of offenses for which they were referred, and referral outcomes for the period between 1984 and 1988.
Abstract
The statistics showed a decrease of 14.2 percent in the number of youths referred for delinquency in southcentral Alaska between 1986 and 1988. The youth referred in the region tended to be white and male; males were older than females. While white youth remained the largest proportion of delinquents, their numbers decreased every year during the reporting period. Only 13.4 percent of the recorded offenses involved serious or violent crimes. Most personal crimes were charged as misdemeanors; only 2 percent of all offenses listed in the region were felony offenses against persons. Over two-thirds of the crimes were property offenses and less than 25 percent of these were felonies. Drug and alcohol offenses numbered about 20 percent of the total number of offenses. 3 figures
