In 1991, 1.94 million defendants were prosecuted at magistrates' courts, 3 percent more than in 1990, and 101,000 were tried at the Crown Court, 1,000 less than in 1990. The number of offenders cautioned for indictable offenses increased by 13,600 to 179,000 in 1991. At all courts, the use of community service orders for indictable offenses increased from 8 to 9 percent; probation remained at 10 percent. In 1991, 60,900 offenders were sentenced to immediate custody, an increase of 6 percent following the fall of 10 percent to 57,600 in 1990. For all offenses, the average sentence length for males age 21 and older has remained the same as 1990 at the magistrates' courts (2.7 months) and at the Crown Court (20.0 months). 6 footnotes, 12 tables, and 5 references
