This Virginia Uniform Crime Reports for 1991 presents data on crime index offenses, police officers killed and assaulted, the value of property stolen and recovered, and arrests.
Abstract
The first section of the report reviews the characteristics and procedures of the 1991 Virginia Uniform Crime Reporting Program, followed by data on crime index offenses (murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. There were 289,619 serious crimes (index offenses) reported; 26.2 percent of these offenses were cleared. The crime rate for Virginia is 4,680.82 Part I offenses for every 100,000 inhabitants. At total of 403,333 arrests were made in the State; 10.9 percent of these involved persons under 18 years old. The theft of jewelry and precious metals accounted for a substantial value of property loss that amounted to $23,174,245. Firearms were used in 67 percent of all murder/nonnegligent manslaughter cases reported; all other weapons made up an additional 33 percent. A total of 12,345 aggravated assaults were reported; residential burglaries accounted for 64.7 percent of all burglaries reported; 21,284 motor vehicle thefts were reported. There were no police officers feloniously killed in the line of duty; 1,656 assaults on officers were reported; 97.6 percent were cleared.
