The report contains a 5-year (1985-89) comparison of index offenses and crime trends for 1989 and 1988. Data on individual offenses address murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, and domestic assault. Other data cover crime by county, crime by contributor, crime rates per county, 1989 arrest totals, juvenile arrests, and adult arrests. During 1989, serious offenses rose 7.7 percent over last year. This substantial increase was impacted by a 38.5-percent jump in homicides and 24 percent more rape cases being reported. Overall, the only major crime category to show a decline was aggravated assault that was down 30.4 percent from last year. For the second consecutive year, drug-related arrests showed an increase, in this case 3.4 percent. In addition, drunk driving apprehensions went up 2 percent and liquor law violations 6.7 percent. These trends are indicative of statewide efforts to combat every illicit aspect of drugs and alcohol.
