The Helsinki Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI), affiliated with the United Nations, convened an international seminar in European criminal law to protect nature and the environment.
Abstract
HEUNI carried out a survey of cooperation and coordination between national authorities of various European countries to control harm to the environment. Materials from this survey were used to prepare the background document for the seminar. Seminar participants addressed the impact of environmental law on criminal law, the United Nations role in protecting the environment, European efforts to control harm to the environment, and the enforcement of environmental law in the Netherlands. Presentations also dealt with models and types of environmental offenses, the effect of administrative law on environmental offenses, administrative and penal sanctions for environmental offenses, and the development of national, environmental criminal law concerning cross-border offenses and offenses committed abroad.
