This unit covers specific performance objectives including development of law enforcement in the United States and in California, characteristics of a profession, reasons for high ethical and moral standards and a "law enforcement code of ethics," and elements of a code of professional conduct. Other performance objectives stressed in this curriculum include unethical behavior by a police officer and the problems created by nonenforcement of the law or acceptance of gratuities. The final section deals with satisfactions and dissatisfactions of a law enforcement career, ways to maintain a balanced lifestyle, and potential effects of career choice.
