This curriculum, which focuses on police history and professionalism, is designed as a guideline for performance objective-based law enforcement basic training developed as part of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) system.
Abstract
This unit covers specific performance objectives including development of law enforcement in the United States and in California, characteristics of a profession, reasons for high ethical and moral standards and a "law enforcement code of ethics," and elements of a code of professional conduct. Other performance objectives stressed in this curriculum include unethical behavior by a police officer and the problems created by nonenforcement of the law or acceptance of gratuities. The final section deals with satisfactions and dissatisfactions of a law enforcement career, ways to maintain a balanced lifestyle, and potential effects of career choice. Supporting materials and references to be used for instruction, remediation, additional reading, viewing, and instructor planning are provided.
