Seven officers were killed in the line of duty in 1991, five feloniously and two by accident or negligence. In addition, 1,954 assaults on police were reported during 1991, amounting to 25 assaults for every 100 police officers. Of these, 27.7 percent resulted in injury to the officer. Physical force was used in 78.7 percent of the assaults; a weapon was used in the other 21.3 percent of the cases.
