This report presents statistics regarding police deaths, assaults on police, and police employment in 1991, as well as data each year since 1982.
Abstract
Seven officers were killed in the line of duty in 1991, five feloniously and two by accident or negligence. In addition, 1,954 assaults on police were reported during 1991, amounting to 25 assaults for every 100 police officers. Of these, 27.7 percent resulted in injury to the officer. Physical force was used in 78.7 percent of the assaults; a weapon was used in the other 21.3 percent of the cases. Law enforcement agencies employed 13,258 full-time personnel and a total of 14,040 persons. Of these, 72 percent were sworn officers and 28.0 were civilians. Tables, figures, and glossary
