The ultimate in safety villages, a concept designed to put safety rules within the grasp of very young children, as developed in Fort Wayne, Indiana is described.
Abstract
The comprehensive Safety Village program for kindergarteners includes a 14-minute video presentation from Walt Disney Productions followed by officers taking children outdoors to practice what they learned from the video. One group is assigned to drive battery-powered miniature vehicles and the other to become safety village pedestrians. The two groups trade places, and the lessons are repeated. At the end of the hour instruction, each child receives a certificate, a coloring book, and a Pizza Hut coupon. Fort Wayne's Safety Village opened July 1, 1992. Its team effort included the police and fire departments, the city of Fort Wayne, the Southtown Mall, and the Parent-Teachers Association. Safety Village programs benefit from a high degree of cooperation between Fort Wayne schools and the safety bureau of the police department.
