Responsibilities of the Swedish Prison and Probation Administration include the operation of remand prisons, the enforcement of sentences to imprisonment, and the provision of supervision to individuals sentenced to probation or conditionally released from prison. Both the prisons and the probation offices are organized regionally. The number of regions has been reduced from 12 to seven to facilitate administrative efficiency, and a considerable increase in decentralized and delegated decisionmaking at regional and local levels has occurred. The 19 national prisons house a total of 1,900 inmates who are sentenced to more than 1 year. Neighborhood prisons incarcerate those who serve sentences of up to 1 year, about 90 percent of each year's intake. There are 61 neighborhood prisons with a capacity for 2,430 inmates. A total of 15,833 sentenced prisoners were received during the 1990-1991 year, a 2.4-percent increase. Slightly over 7,900 persons were under a sentence to probation during 1990-1991. Community service was initiated in five jurisdictions on January 1, 1990. The number of staff posts in the prison system totaled 6,080 for 1990-1991; 5,000 posts were in the prison system, 748 in the probation system, and 240 at the central administration. 9 tables
