Abstract
There were 5,749 male and 306 female prisoners in custody in New South Wales during May 1992, an increase of 328 over May 1991. Victoria reported the second largest number of prisoners, 2,126 male and 124 female inmates. The number of prisoners in Victoria declined by 72 since May 1991. The 114 prisoners on work release in New South Wales are included in the count of prisoners. Sentenced receptions in New South Wales reached a 9-year high despite a drop in fine default numbers. The daily averages remained stable. 1 figure and 3 tables
