This kit of reproducible materials provides informational and educational tools to help communities with emerging gang problems to enlist parents in preventing individual children from joining gangs, preventing gangs from becoming established in a community, or driving gangs out of a community.
Abstract
The kit's messages are based on the knowledge, experience, and judgment of law enforcement and other criminal justice personnel, youth workers, youth program staff, concerned parents, and others experienced in working to prevent or rid the community of gangs. The kit includes materials for parents, materials for younger children ages 5-9, and materials for children ages 9-12 and can be used flexibly to suit the gang situation in a particular jurisdiction. Included are suggestions for parenting, booklets, games, posters, a handbook for involving the news media, and a list of national resources. Each item can be copied, printed, photocopied, or offset printed, as well as localized by adding the community telephone numbers and addresses in the space provided. Although the materials are copyrighted, users may produce as many copies as needed for free distribution.
