This volume is intended to help law enforcement personnel and others to prepare and deliver presentations to children and youth regarding personal security, prevention of alcohol and other drug use, and the prevention of other specific types of crime.
Abstract
The guidelines and materials are also intended for use by parents, school personnel, religious leaders, civic leaders, older siblings, grandparents, neighbors, and others who interact with youth. The materials are intended to provide a comprehensive reference to enable a reasonably informed professional to give either a single short presentation or a series of classroom talks to children in kindergarten through 12th grade. The manual's first section contains materials for students in kindergarten through grade 6 on self-protection, alcohol and other drug use, conflict resolution, property crime and vandalism, gangs, traffic responsibility, and respect for police and the law. The next section presents materials for grades 7 through 12 in an age-appropriate level. Topics include alcohol and other drugs, cults and gangs, bias-related violence, motor vehicle responsibility, personal protection, conflict resolution, and sexual assault prevention. The final section provides guidelines on how to make presentations, how to handle disclosures of victimization, and related topics. Each chapter also includes sample materials and activities, a resource list, and ideas for presentations to parents on the topic discussed. Lists of general resource organizations, programs, and publications
