The director of the United States Office of National Drug Control Policy presents a keynote address providing an overview of a 3-day symposium on issues related to drug law enforcement and drug policy and comments on efforts at international cooperation in this area.
Abstract
He reported that he met with European leaders last year to discuss an international strategy to combat drug abuse and drug trafficking. He noted that the rapid pace of economic and political change, with the emergence of powerful regional economic centers in Europe, North America, and the Pacific rim, has significant implications for international efforts to combat drug trafficking. He noted that the symposium sessions will explain the national perspectives and operational needs of various customs agencies along with the latest technologies in contraband detection and cargo inspection to curtail the supply of drugs. He also described Operation Green Ice, a global multinational law enforcement operation, that disrupted several of the functions of the Cali cartel worldwide.
