The National Institute of Criminology and Criminalistics was established in 1960 as a research institution supervised by the procurator general of the Republic of Hungary. The institute's primary task is to develop the theory of criminology and criminalistics and to conduct practical research in these two fields. In the area of criminology, the institute conducts research on the problems of the morphology, etiology, and prevention of crime and studies governmental and social crime prevention measures. In the area of criminalistics, the institute focuses on the practical and theoretical study of methods of investigating and prosecuting criminal offenses. Other tasks of the institute are to publish research findings, prepare education and documentation materials, promote the training of specialists in crime control, and build and maintain international scientific relations. Specific research endeavors of the institute are described, and institute publications are profiled.
