This report describes demonstration projects in community policing currently being operated in Montgomery County (Md.).
Abstract
The Montgomery County Police Department regards these programs as an intermediate step in its growth in community policing and not as an end product. The county's style of community policing will be the generalist approach rather than the specialized approach. Many of the programs described were created by street officers. A crucial element of each program was community involvement in solving a community problem in cooperation with police operations. Individual programs include a project in an area with low and moderate incomes and a large number of non-English- speaking residents, a mountain bike patrol unit in a central business district, and a project to address drug-related problems in a small, primarily minority community. Other projects included a foot and scooter patrol program, a neighborhood coalition that addresses community concerns about alcohol and other drugs, a program of community involvement in the investigation of a series of rapes in a small geographic area, and a drug law enforcement program.
