Research conducted by New York State's Department of Correctional Services provides information on female inmate trends regarding female offenders committed to State prison, female inmate characteristics, domestic violence victims, drug use, inmate discipline, women committed for homicide, and inmate mothers.
Abstract
The Department of Correctional Services receives numerous questions on female offender issues, particularly with respect to how demographic characteristics of female inmates change over time, crimes committed by female offenders, how women in custody compare to men in custody, and how women differ from men in their adjustment to prison. Reports focusing on these issues are available that concern demographic and legal history characteristics of female offenders, domestic violence experienced by incarcerated women, female drug offenders, substance convictions involving crack, female security in and adjustment to the prison setting, factors involved in female homicide commitments, and the participation of women in correctional facility nursery programs.
