The STAR curriculum guide contains suggestions for parent and community involvement, activity plans and bibliographies for different grade levels, a national directory of violence prevention resources, and an academic bibliography for educators and parents. The STAR curriculum focuses on the following objectives: help children understand the nature of conflict, alternatives to violence, and the importance of rules and obeying them; develop children's understanding of the harm associated with guns; help children think through situations where they may be pushed into doing things they know are not safe; enable children to identify people in the community with whom they feel safe and safe places to go if they are scared or in danger; help children learn about basic feelings; help children avoid conflicts by recognizing and appreciating differences and similarities between them and others; develop appropriate responses in children to adult only tools and weapons as compared with toys; help children classify objects as safe versus dangerous; and provide children with a feeling of self-worth and a desire to stay safe.
