Researchers have identified individual, family, peer, community, and school-related problems that make juveniles more prone to use illegal drugs. Factors that place youth at risk for drug abuse are parents and friends who use drugs, poverty and neighborhood disorganization, poor family management that may include severe or inconsistent discipline, physical or emotional abuse, early behavioral problems, school failure, and an environment in which choices are limited. The video suggests a multifaceted strategy that can counter the factors that place youth at risk for drug abuse. Positive responses should include improvement in family and peer relations, the encouragement and rewarding of responsible behavior, the development of a positive school role in children's lives, and the expansion of public and social services as well as recreational opportunities for youth. Overall, a positive strategy provides opportunities for juveniles to develop skills that build self-esteem and provide direction for the future and to bond with role models who promote responsible behavior.
