The award is designed to encourage communities to become more involved in violence prevention and to assist local governments in identifying and developing practical projects that will reduce violence in the community. Projects may address specific groups (children, youth, or the family) or specific problems (drug abuse, violence in the media, or violence in sports). Projects are judged according to their cost-effectiveness, success in preventing or reducing violence, extent to which they are community-based, and capacity to be developed elsewhere. The three winning projects in 1992 included the Julalikari Night Patrol in the Northern Territory, which dealt with violence associated with alcohol consumption among aborigines; the West End Forum in Victoria, which addressed the problem of violence in and around licensed premises; and the Kids' Help Line, now operating in five Australian States, to provide counseling to children. Ten other projects were commended for their work in the areas of family violence, adolescents at risk, community action, justice institutions, preventive behavior strategies, public violence, and violence and entertainment.
