Abstract
Through a series of general sessions, debates, workshops, training seminars, and discussion groups, participants explored the exercise of discretion in pretrial matters, the administration and delivery of pretrial services, policymaking, the allocation of resources to pretrial within the criminal justice system, and related research and evaluation concerns. Participants specifically examined jail overcrowding, pretrial release and the courts and legislatures, supervised release, pretrial diversion practices, restitution, community service, dispute resolution, and community corrections. Other discussion topics focused on criminal justice reform, pretrial release and the judiciary, police discretion, bail reform, alternatives to the secure detention of juveniles, juvenile justice and children's rights, pretrial assessment and treatment, the role of legal aid in pretrial services, alcohol and drug abuse issues in pretrial release, and victim issues. Additional information on the symposium program is appended, and a list of attendees is provided in a separate volume.
