In addition to examining terrorism-related acts, incidents also include other types of violence against Americans. The chronology is designed to describe major anti-United States incidents that occurred in 1991; classified incidents are not included. The selection of incidents was based on the following criteria: lethality, major property damage, unusual tactics or weapons used, and perceptibility of targets as the United States or representative of U.S. interests. A statistical overview indicates the number of Americans killed in terrorist- related incidents from 1968 through 1991, the geographic areas of anti-U.S. incidents in 1991, targets of anti-U.S. incidents by region in 1991, and number of anti-U.S. incidents in various regions during Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1991, through February 28, 1991. Narrative descriptions of the chronology of anti-U.S. violent incidents in 1991 are presented by the following regions: inter-America, sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe, and Near East and South Asia.
