Abstract
Following descriptions of Ohio courts, the 1992 annual report of the Ohio Supreme Court is presented. This is followed by the presentation of statistics for the courts of appeals, the court of claims, divisions of the courts of common pleas, municipal courts, and county courts. A total of 3,014,577 new cases were filed in Ohio courts in 1992: 2,646 in the Supreme Court, 11,377 in the courts of appeals, 614,865 in the courts of common pleas, 2,147,540 in the municipal courts, 236,963 in the county courts, and 1,186 in the Ohio Court of Claims. Although all courts remain busy, two specific areas continue to warrant special attention. Felony filings in the common pleas courts continued to climb in 1992. With a nearly 5-percent increase this year, these case filings have risen 35 percent since 1988. Also, the number of delinquency cases transferred from the juvenile courts to be prosecuted as adult felony cases exceeded 400 for the second year in a row. A commitment to the consistent reporting of case statistics has enhanced the ability of the judiciary to develop new approaches to case management and make better use of resources. Alternative dispute resolution, technology, and other innovative approaches to handling caseloads continue to grow in popularity throughout the State.
