This manual on short-term group counseling in both institutional and community settings offers practical strategies for introducing, planning, and implementing a successful short-term group counseling program.
Abstract
In addition to profiling basic group counseling techniques, this third edition of the manual discusses counseling techniques for such current issues as employment, stress, HIV and AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse, women's issues, and prerelease, as well as counseling to resolve disputes between groups. A discussion of the evolution of group counseling focuses on the benefits of group sessions, working with people in groups, the dynamics of shifting from an orientation toward self to an orientation toward the group, the guided group experience, the counseling environment, and offenders and society. After identifying the objectives of short-term group counseling, the manual presents chapters on the practical matters of preparing for and conducting the session, special methods and techniques, special applications, closure and followup, and evaluation of the session. 21 suggested readings
