An overview of the situation of older offenders in the correctional system notes that the number of inmates 55 and older is increasing both in absolute terms and in percentage of the total population in State and Federal prison systems. Yet most prisons are not designed structurally or programmatically for older inmates, nor do they meet their needs. This document first provides an overview of the aging process and its implications for physical and mental health as well as medical care. A review of research findings on older inmates addresses legislation related to the elderly, classification and assignment, the physical plant, programs and services, staff selection and training, and incarcerated older women. An examination of policy and programmatic issues focuses on assessment, accessibility and adaptation, special units, medical care, staff training, and community involvement. Existing special units for older inmates are profiled for various States, and recommended resources and information sources are listed. 69 references
