There were 52,321 incidents of domestic violence reported by New Jersey police in 1992, a decrease of 6 percent from 1991; 58 percent of the reported offenses were assaults. Murders decreased by 2 percent in the same time period. Arrests were made in 38 percent of the cases; there were 3 percent more arrests in 1992 than in 1991. The most frequent day of domestic violence occurrences was Sunday, with most crimes occurring between 8:00 pm and midnight. Children were involved in 9 percent of the offenses and witnessed another 42 percent. Females were victims in 83 percent of all domestic violence offenses and persons over the age of 59 were victims in 3 percent. The number of domestic violence complainants who had prior court orders issued against the offender dropped slightly during the reporting period. Alcohol or drugs were involved in 42 percent of the reported offenses.
