The three facilities include a maximum-security boys training school, a medium-security diagnostic center, and a minimum-security halfway house. Goals of the Youth Corrections Mediation Program are to teach communication and conflict resolution skills to residents and staff in juvenile correctional facilities, to improve the quality of life in these facilities, and to ease the transition of youth from correctional facilities to the home environment. The mediation process allows parties to express their feelings and points of view, identify needs, clarify issues, explore solutions, and negotiate an agreement that is satisfactory to both parties. This third program manual contains an implementation guide and a section on parent/child mediation training. The guide outlines various program implementation models and describes the parent/child mediation process, case management, and training procedures. One of the program models requires a partnership between the youth correctional facility implementing the program and a community mediation agency. The section on parent/child mediation provides a comprehensive and detailed 4-day training program. An appendix contains a variety of forms intended as models for use in the case management system, as well as a list of resources that may aid in the implementation of parent/child mediation in youth correctional settings.
