In response to a mandate from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch put together a training program for its adult probation staff about the transmission of infectious blood diseases and the prevention measures which must be followed in order to reduce their chance of infection. This document contains a lesson plan for that training. The taking and handling of probationers' urine samples was identified as the activity that put probation staff at most risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, in particular AIDS and Hepatitis B. The training materials, therefore, contain instructions on the procedures to be followed prior to taking a urine sample, proper handling of the sample and what to do in an emergency such as when body fluids are accidentally spilled or someone is stuck with a needle. There are segments in the training material dealing specifically with Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis, which is an airborne disease. Following the lesson plan is a detailed plan for bloodborne pathogens exposure control adopted by the Office of Adult Probation.
